Thanks for your comment, Joe. You're right about The Medium is the Massage—I'm by no means well versed in McLuhan's oeuvre, and this post merited a little more research. As for my claim that digitization is presumptuous, I didn't mean the rights issue. I trust neither you nor Scott would undertake such a project in violation of copyright. What I meant was that to change the medium of a work that claims the medium is the message (or massage) presumes a pretty intimate understanding of McLuhan, and perhaps even undermines his thesis.

Having had a glimpse of your limited-edition handout, which session-goers were kind enough to circulate widely, I've seen your proof that Kobo "produces" lousy type and copy. I have two questions: first, did Kobo produce these files or are they only distributing them? It's possible the publishers created those files. Second, are files distributed by other e-tailers any better? Anyway, my main point in commenting on your remarks about Kobo was that the confrontational tone seemed out of place, when most of BookCamp took a more constructive approach. I guess that's a matter of personal taste—a subject to which blogs are well suited.

The Medium Is the Massage is the actual title of a book, as you could have found out even had you forgotten. Scott is working on the McLuhan works, to several of which his family owns the rights, not me. As such, conversion to digital format is hardly “presumptuous.”

I proved Kobo produces lousy type and copy. (Ask Tamblyn what he told me afterward.) Unlike defenders of Toronto mediocrity, I call out failings. I refuse to call a spade a diamond.
